1) Megalithic. The local residential physiognomy in the middle, but most likely also in ancient times, was defined mainly by numerous dwellings, which are preserved to this day.

In our century they are called megalithic of Mani, because in the construction of the buildings, as a rule, stones of large size have been used.

In some settlements, ruins of massive rectangular war towers are preserved, such as “Christea”, “Dourakis”, “Veletakos”, “Kavouris” etc.

They are built with the megalithic system and testify that the fortified tower has a very long tradition in the area.

2) One of the destinations in the wider area that can be described as magical is Agios Nikolaos (Selinitsa) Manis.

Where the rough Messinian land meets the wonderful blue sea, the traditional architecture of the village with stone dominating everywhere create images that are imprinted in our hearts forever.

Mansions or simple stone houses, which while giving us the impression of uniformity, are nevertheless not the same. Built from stones from the same area, they become an extension of nature itself, integrated into the steepest slopes of the terrain.

Manorial or simple, rectangular or square, ground floor or two storey, they served all social classes (rich or poor) connected by the dominant material…stone. Thus, stonework made with rough (slow) or hewn stone, reveals the art, patience, endurance and imagination of the master craftsman for each project separately. All these gifts are felt from the stone foundation, stone or solid brick roofs to the top with handmade tiles or roof.

Naturalness, functionality, the spirit of economy are some virtues of stone houses for the city man and the fragmented way of modern life.

Due to the heavy construction and better behavior in the earthquake, the ideal solution for the base is the footed beams. The hidden pillars form the binding at the corners of the house and together with the 0.50 cm wall, complete the sturdiness of the building. For the best aesthetics of the house, the placement of electrical and plumbing are integrated into the walls without being obvious. The hidden ties are used for binding between the column and the wall and are done every one meter. The division of each floor is made with wooden beams and a floor (wooden or tiled). The construction, being wooden and consisting of beams, also includes covering with wide planks, membrane of German origin, squares impregnated with medicine, Styrofoam Down, stone wool and tiles for better thermal and sound insulation of the house.
