Agios Dimitrios
…in the footsteps of Pausanias
Southeast of Agios Nikolaos, is the picturesque little fishing village of Ag. Dimitriou, in the place of ancient Pefnos, with its rock island.
In Pephnos, according to Mythology, the Dioskouri, Castor and Polydeukis, who were demigods, protectors of sailors and brothers of the Beautiful Helen, were born from one egg.
This egg was the result of the love of Zeus, who had transformed into a swan, and the beautiful Leda, daughter of Glaucus, who, to avoid him, had also transformed into a goose.
From Pausanias it is said that in Pephnos there was a kingdom ruled by Tyndareus, father of Helen the Fair, queen of Sparta and Clytemnestra, queen of Mycenae.
Paris landed in Agios Demetrios with his ships and the beautiful Helen and her captors boarded for Troy.
On the road to Trachila, 3.5 km west is the unexploited cave “Katafygio” (Agiou Dimitriou Selinitsa), which is considered one of the largest in the country, according to the opinions of experts who have visited it.
