Stoupa

The newly built village that quickly developed into a famous tourist resort.

Its original name was Potamos, from the river that crossed it, but it was renamed Stoupa from the stupa that the locals put into the sea to soften and process them easily.

The two picturesque, shallow, sandy and organized beaches with the clearest waters, attract visitors from all over the world. The variety of the landscape is unique.

Jewels, true gifts of nature, the small rivers, the glyphs, the incredible caves, the little ports, the islets and the hill of the Castle. Excursions in the wider area offer strong emotions. Restaurants, taverns and coffee bars on the beach cater for all tastes.

In particular, the beautiful coast of Kalogria has become known to the ends of the earth because in 1917 Kazantzakis and Zorbas lived there. There they got to know each other well, their friendship was forged and the famous writer was inspired by the unique masterpiece Life and State of Alexis Zorba.

Guests of Kazantzakis were on the unique virgin beach, apart from his wife Galatea Kazantzakis, Angelos Sikelianos with his wife Eva, Marika Kotopoulis and Kyveli.

A short distance away is the small village of Leuktron from where the first families descended and slowly built the Stupa. The city of Lefktro is ancient.

It had been destroyed many times and its ancient citadel had been occupied by Franks and Venetians.

KALOGRIA BEACH
The beach of Kalogria is an extensive sandy beach with clear blue-green waters. It is also known as Zorbas beach, as Nikos Kazantzakis and Alexis Zorbas lived there. It is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches of Messinia. It is an organized beach with sunbeds and umbrellas, which attracts a large number of visitors in the summer months. Here you can drink your coffee at one of the adjacent beach bars, indulge in water sports and enjoy the unique sunset.
STOUPA BEACH
The beach of Stoupa is located right in front of the main road of the village. It is an amazing beach with fine golden sand and turquoise waters. On the busy street directly above, you’ll find dozens of cafes, restaurants and souvenir shops.
